Transitioning to working at home
Dated: November 23 2020
For months now people have been trying to work from home with minimal effort in organizing an office or business from home; the reality is this may be the new way of doing business. Many people especially the millennials may not remember the telecommute era in the 90’s when their parents transitioned from office to home. The telecommute era didn’t have the complexity of managing a virus, and home schooling their children. I have worked from home most of my adult life, with the exception working during my paramedic career; over the years, I have managed successful businesses from home. So, I feel I can say I know what needs to be done, that said this week I want to share some tips to make you more effective.
· Create a regular morning routine, make the routine that guides you into the chair is another. What in your morning routine indicates you're about to start work? It might be making a cup of coffee and taking the time to actually savor it before you start the day at work.
· Maintain regular business hours, this means you get up as if you’re going to an office, because you are even though it is at home. I have gone as far as to post an open sign on my desk and door so my family also develops a mindset of I am working. Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps many remote workers maintain work-life balance.
· Set ground rules with other people in your home who share your space for when you work. If you have children who come home from school or are homeschooled while you're still working, they need clear rules about what they can and cannot do during that time. Take breaks, schedule your time to follow the in-office policies and leave the house at least once a day helps lead to being more effective at work.
· If at all possible keep a dedicated workspace. This isn’t always possible in todays family environment. Remember even though you’re working from home your professional demeanor matters, your professional goals still need to be heard and met so that you can advance within your organization.
